Due to a recent transformation within our legal team we are seeking a dynamic Senior Legal Counsel – Statutory Entities to join our in house legal team based in our Sydney CBD offices.  The role is responsible for the delivery of legal services relating to the distribution of Allianz products and related issues.  Reporting to the Group General Counsel this is a key leadership role within the legal team who will partner with Executive General Managers and their leadership teams to deliver sound legal advice that will delight the client.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver, and ensure the timely delivery by your direct reports of, high quality legal advice to key distribution clients in the following key areas:
    • Workers Compensation
    • CTP
    • Data and privacy
    • Claims Management
    • Regulatory relationships and notices (scheme specific regulators)
  • Lead, develop and mentor your direct reports, and ensure their ongoing professional development.
  • Manage client expectations, ensure matters are appropriately triaged and dealt with in accordance with a timetable and scope of instructions agreed with the client.
  • Frame and consider legal advice in its commercial context.
  • Assess and communicate clearly legal risk, explore with the business the commercial risks relevant to the context of the advice, and take responsibility for partnering with the business in making (or assisting in the making of) decisions to be taken in the light of the legal advice and risk assessment.
  • Exercise sound legal and commercial judgement.
  • Inspire the trust and confidence of the MD board and senior executives.
  • Effectively represent Allianz in all interactions with internal and external stakeholders.

 About You

The successful applicant will have demonstrated experience as a high achiever in a similar role.  Ideally you will have experience within insurance or financial services. 

You will possess the following skills:

  • Bachelor of Laws or equivalent certification
  • Admitted to practice as a barrister and solicitor of a State or Territory Supreme court
  • Current legal practicing certificate
  • 10+ years relevant legal experience in a senior position in-house or in a large national or global law firm
  • A deep familiarity with, and understanding of, the regulatory environment in which Allianz operates including governance, risk, compliance and assurance, and of the commercial, social and political trends in this regulatory environment.
  • Conscientious with a strong attention to detail on all matters
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong influencing and negotiation skills
  • The ability to work both autonomously and as a member of a team
  • Effective organisation skills and incisive commercial judgement
  • High level technical expertise in workers compensation insurance law and financial services regulatory law, and related areas
  • Strong supervision, training and mentoring skills, with demonstrated leadership capabilities and experience managing direct reports
